Hunt the North Maine Woods for Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock!
We chase ruffed grouse and woodcock out of Umcolcus Sporting Camps in northern Maine, well known for it's superb grouse and woodcock cover and 3.5 million acres of logging trails and endless areas to hunt, with no competition! We are in the direct flight path of migrating woodcock so bagging both grouse and woodcock in a day is highly likely. Lunch and transportation provided, hunt your dogs or our dogs, or a combination. First time beginner dogs our specialty.
There is nothing better than walking down a meandering logging trail on a beautiful Maine October day with blue skies, cool crispy temps, and stunning scenery, listening to the dog bells and the thunderous explosions of flushing ruffed grouse!

Umcolcus Sporting Camps
Umcolcus Sporting Camps is located in the northern part of Maine's Penobscot County in Oxbow two and a half hours north of Bangor International Airport. They have served sportsmen and vacationers for over three generations since 1917. Beautiful cabins, gorgeous scenery, delicious meals (unless you prefer to cook in your cabin), close to outstanding bird cover, which means more time hunting, less time riding. An added advantage is that the camps are a short ride from nearby RT 11.
This is the ultimate Maine bird hunting adventure! A good set of broken in field boots are a must. Don't forget rain gear. Early October can be warm, so quick wicking outer garments work well. Mornings are cool, so layers are the order of the day. Hunter orange required for your safety. Count on a guide prepared hot lunch to help make this a lifetime memory for you. Not sure how your dogs will do? No problem, bring them along and we'll check them out. Remember, watching dogs work the grouse woods is one of the best things on earth! You can get your license online at the Maine IF&W (click on the link) and keep a copy on your phone.
See the Upland Hunting Packages at Umcolcus Sporting Camps, oe see our rates page for details. Grouse season starts the last Saturday in September, woodcock season starts 1 October. There is no Sunday hunting in Maine.

Jay Wright // Nov 10, 2019 Thanks for a great Maine grouse hunt - ended up with three birds! Your dogs did great, and I really enjoyed the area, Maynard's in Maine, and your company. I learned a lot from you, and you really put me at ease. Looking forward to a future trip!
