Fish the beautiful lakes and rivers of Maine
Maine is full of waters loaded with game fish. We are close to the Penobscot river and numerous ponds, lakes, and streams. Fly fish, spin cast, troll from a boat, or wade fish three mile long Grand Lake Stream. We are close to Bar Harbor and Acadia national park and are ideally positioned to conduct full or half day trips only 45 minutes away. Packed lunch and all gear provided. We practice catch and release.
Smallmouth are ferocious fighters, and will readily take any fly or lure. The nearby Penobscot river, St. Croix river, and local lakes and ponds are full of them. Many of these lakes also contain largemouth bass. Prime time is Memorial day to late July as the bass start to spawn and 50 plus fish days are not uncommon. Late summer means warming water temps and dropping water levels so we focus on the bigger lakes. We use flies, poppers, lures of all sorts, plastics, and sometimes live bait. We fish out of our 21 ft Freighter canoe, 18 ft John Boat, or our recently acquired FlyCraft inflatable drift boat. If fishing the Grand Lake Stream area, you have a hot shore lunch option, as many of the islands have fire pits and picnic tables in a beautiful setting. Choose between steak, hamburgers, pork chops or burgers and dogs, with pickles and cheese, fried potatoes and onions, hot guide coffee and a homemade dessert You can swim, fish, nap, or join in!This is a traditional Grand Lake Stream shore lunch which everyone should experience!
We troll after ice-out (early to mid May) the traditional Maine way with fly rods and hand tied tandem streamer flies. Streamers imitate the smelt that come into the shallows in the spring to spawn. Landlock salmon fishing is most fun when the fish are on the surface which usually occurs in early May thru June, and October thru November. We also catch brook trout and togue (lake trout). We use floating lines, sink tip lines, and lead core lines, one of which is in the wake of the outboard. We also use various spoons, and live and dead smelt. Whatever it takes to get you on fish! Bring your layers as spring in Maine has fast changing weather.
Fly fishing Grand Lake Stream
Three mile long Grand Lake Stream offers some of the best brook trout and landlocked salmon fishing in the country and is listed in Trout Unlimited's "America's 100 Best Trout Streams". Grand Lake Stream has a special 1-25 October catch and release season. Prime time is Memorial day to mid July, and Late September thru 25 October. Streamers, nymphing, and dry flies all work. Grand Lake stream connects West Grand Lake (north) and Big Lake (south). In the spring, the salmon enter the stream in huge numbers. There is also a state fish hatchery so there are numerous brook trout and landlocked hatchery fish in the stream. In the fall, the salmon enter the stream to spawn. Grand Lake Stream is an historic fishing town with many beautiful lodges and cabins to stay.
Remote fishing adventure
We offer a chance to fish remote areas (fly fishing only) in the north Maine woods for native brook trout. This involves a stay at a campsite or Maine sporting camp, or remote cabin. Two day minimum, all meals and gear included. We fish Nesowadnehunk lake (aka, the trout factory), Debouille ponds, Oxbow, and the Moosehead lake area. Targeted species are native brook trout. The difference between wild and native trout is contained in this link and is worth a read.
