We had a great upland season here in Maine. The later the season, the more birds we found, specifically grouse. Woodcock seemed tough this year, and when found, were usually singles. We hunted the Allagash, Portage, Rockwood, Jackman, Danforth, Houlton and Grand Lake Stream. We had days when we would move 15-20 birds a day, and days where we would only move 5-8. You had to get out into the woods and burn up some shoe leather, that's for sure. We averaged 8-12 miles a day, and hit lots of covers every day. Early October was very warm, and remained so up until November (when winter just decided to drop by and stay for an extended visit! :). We hunted throughout the big wind storm we had and had some of the best hunting ever - and all the birds were on the ground! We did get a little wet. Both the storm day, and the day after were some of our best days.
The Chick Hill Bird Dawg Gang will continue to hunt as long as we can until Dec 31st. Give us a call if you have questions about bird hunting in Maine.
